- Edward was raised to be king. He learned to be a soldier, not a scholar as his father and grandfather were. Lots of troubles during his reign with Danish vikings. He deafeated the Danes at Jorvik (York) and ended their rule there, but later the Norse expelled from Ireland came to settle there. He increased his hold on Mercia, as well as control over the Dnish rulers in East Anglia and the Five Bouroughs. He now ruled over half of England.
Reigned 899-924. He defeated the Danes (918), taking East Anglia, and also conquered Mercia (918) and Northumbria (920). He had three wives and many children. His wife, Edgive was a daughter of Sigehelm of Meophan, Earl of Kent.
